What is bi-directional charging?
Bidirectional charging is an emerging technology that allows more and more electric vehicles to not only store energy for driving, but also to power buildings and the broader grid. It can keep refrigerators, lights and the Internet running in homes and other buildings during emergencies, eliminating or reducing the impact of most power outages. Two-way charging also has the potential to make the entire grid greener and more efficient, increasing and making better use of wind and solar power.
Simply put, bi-directional charging means that your car battery can receive energy from the grid and share in the power it generates. However there will be two main categories of distinction.
1: Car to Grid (V2G): Energy is output from the EV charger to support the grid.
2: Car to Home (v2h): Energy is used to power a home or business.
The inevitable question, so how does this work for charging my electric car?
When you charge your electric car, the alternating current (AC) it receives from the grid needs to be converted to direct current (DC) in order for it to power the car battery in the correct form. This can, of course, be done through a converter in the vehicle or an external charger.
